Obesity in children


Doctors have long warned that childhood obesity has become epidemic. But the new research is among the first to show how much more is at stake than fat children growing into fat adults. Obesity can seriously sicken children now not just in the future. More and more children are suffering from type 2 diabetes. Obesity can affect asthma and spark gallbladder disease. In the late 90's diabetes diagnosis doubled compared to the amount recorded in the late 70's. Diagnosis of obesity alone tripled to reach one percent of hospitalizations. Other obesity-related hospitalizations were more rare, but are increasing rapidly. Sleep apnea rose and gallbladder disease tripled. Asthma complications due to obesity rose 40 percent. Dr. Nazart Mirza of children's national medical center said that the kids that are fat are getting fatter. Dr. Mirza has patients as young as five years of age that have obesity caused sleep apnea.              Obesity can cause many health problems, but one of the main problems with obesity is diabetes. 25 percent of children are already showing signs of changes that could lead to diabetes. Doctors fear that many of today's generation will fall into the disabling disease before their 30's. It has been known for a while that being obese or even overweight can greatly increase chances of diabetes, but evidence is shown that younger and younger patients are at risk. Research was done by researches at Yale University. They looked at more than 150 obese children varying from ages 4 to 18. They discovered that in the 55 aged 4 to 10 25 percent were showing signs of insulin resistance. This is where cells gradually become less receptive to the effects of the hormone insulin, which reduces blood glucose levels after a meal or snack.
