Nightmare


As Gatsby did with Daisy, Fitzgerald kept Ginevra's letters typed and bound into a 275-page book. Ginevra considered Fitzgerald's letters unimportant and destroyed them. A year later, Ginevra sent Fitzgerald an announcement of her marriage, just as Daisy announced to Gatsby her marriage to Tom after he left for the war. How "could [Ginevra (Daisy)] have been interested in a nobody like Scott Fitzgerald [Gatsby],"" (Meyers 29). Fitzgerald did not get the top girl but he kept on dreaming.
             Dreaming of the ideal Daisy, Gatsby was unable to see the true reality that Daisy could not fulfill Gatsby's dream. Gatsby cannot take in that the ideal dream that he has of Daisy, cannot coexist with reality. Gatsby remembers Daisy as that young sweet innocent girl in the past. He sees her as the perfect woman and worthy of all of his affection and praise as "he's read a Chicago paper for years just on the chance of catching a glimpse of Daisy's name- (Fitzgerald 84) Gatsby's reunion with Daisy is short of what he suspected as she has changed dramatically from the sweet innocent girl of what he still dreams about. Gatsby, however, is determined to regain the Daisy that he loves by reliving the past, "Can't repeat the past?.Why of course you can!- (Fitzgerald 116). Gatsby chases Daisy by buying a "house so that Daisy would be just across the bay- (Fitzgerald 83). Gatsby believes that with his luxurious life and riches he has acquired, and reinventing himself, he will be able to use his money to recapture the heart of Daisy and rewrite the past. Day after day, Gatsby strives for the perfection that he envisions Daisy as, however, cannot make it into a reality. Daisy seems to never be able to live up to Gatsby's ideal of her, but Gatsby cannot see that she can't, "I'm going to fix everything just the way it was before. She'll see- (Fitzgerald 117). Gatsby's downfall is choosing Daisy to represent his great vision, as his "commitment is not to a woman but to a vision.
