Euthanasia


S. In January of 1997, the U.S. Supreme Court Administration, along with the American Medical Association has gone on record opposing any measures that would legalize euthanasia. One thing is certain, efforts to legalize euthanasia will continue in the U.S.
             Ethical Aspects of Euthanasia.
             .
             Many faith groups with in Christian, Muslim, Jewish and other religions believe that God gives life and therefore only God should take it away. They feel that suicide should not be option. On the other hand atheists and agnostics, who disagree with religion based arguments, believe that assisted suicide should be an option in case one day they develop a terminal illness and their life becomes unbearable. Many religious groups believe that human suffering can be a positive value for the terminally ill. They say suffering can be "a divinely appointed opportunity for learning or purification." Others say that pain experienced by the terminally ill can be controlled with tolerable levels through proper pain management, so there is no need for suicide. Another argument is should people who wish to die because they are suffering from depression have the right to be involved with Physician assisted suicide.
             Religious Groups against Euthanasia.
             There are a few arguments offered by Christians:.
            
             • Life is a gift from God, only he can start a life and he should be the only one to end a life.
            
             • Anyone who commits suicide is committing a sin.
            
             • God does not send us any experience that we cannot handle. He supports people in suffering. To actively seek an end to one's life would represent a lack of trust in Gods promise. .
             In 1979, the Lutheran Church issued a report on Euthanasia, it condemned euthanasia because it involves suicide and murder and is contrary to God's law. The Mennonites feel that the state should not allow assisted suicide but rather control physical and emotional pain and support the dying within the community setting.
