Which is why this council is a very good organization to regulate the proper ethical standards of engineers from the non-ethical standards that certain engineers may be practicing. The council is also a major part of disciplinary actions to those that are not bound to the mission statement of engineers or those that may want to side step around certain aspects of engineering tasks. When the lives of people are in the hands of engineers, there are no side steps, in fact there should be more steps and double and triple checked steps to ensure the health and safety of the public is maintained.
A prime example of improper ethics and decision making of engineers or engineering firms in general was the project disaster of the Kansas City, Missouri Hyatt Regency Hotel Walkways Collapse. As the United States most devastating structural failure, in terms of loss of life and injuries, the Kansas City Hyatt Regency walkways collapse left 114 dead and in excess of 200 injured. In addition, millions of dollars in costs resulted from the collapse, and thousands of lives were adversely affected, all because of disputed conversations between and engineering design firm and a fabricator, and negligence on the part of the contracting engineering firm. The case provides a vivid example of the importance of accuracy and detail in engineering design and shop drawings particularly regarding revisions, and the costly consequences of negligence in this realm. The case is particularly useful in structural design, statics and materials studies. This horrific display of shear negligence on the part of the contractor and the design firm directly shows how the question of proper ethical decisions must be made and not side stepped. A rather simple parameter was just overlooked and approved because of lack of complexity and time permitted to fix the situation. A decision that appeared to be safe and agreeable at the time of construction seemed to be a sensible one, however the lack of design and calculation checking procedures resulted in what happen to over one hundred people losing their lives.
