Instructional Strategies for Second Graders


            These are 5 instructional strategies or techniques that I would use with a second grade classroom. I would develop and promote these protective factors within the classroom. The first strategy I would introduce is having me as the teacher to talk to and represent myself as a good role model. I would have the students write 2 sentences in a journal everyday. At the end of the week I would be available to review and talk with the child one on one about what they have written. If I am not able to talk to them then I may respond to what they wrote. The second technique would be allowing the child to take responsibility so that their self-esteem would go up and they would have a feeling of belonging. I would have each student be responsible for a job in the classroom. The job would be done daily so that they would feel some responsibility and the good of accomplishing the task for themselves and others in the classroom. Thirdly I would emulate positive things on a classroom bulletin board. I would have it display positive things that occur in and out of the classroom. This would assist children in looking for positive behaviors in others. It would also get them looking outside of their centeredness. Children at this age do tend to believe that everything revolves around them. The fourth thing I would do in the classroom is having a weekly skit to promote role-playing. I would set up groups of students for the month. This time would be used to present some problem and see how the group of children could role-play to come up with the correct outcome. The fifth thing I would do is have a daily 15-20 minute of reading time out loud to the class. Taking this time to read humorous and enjoyable books will allow the children to escape, relax and laugh. This is an opportunity for the children to be creative and envision in their own mind what characters look like. This is a different approach than popping in a video for them to watch.
