But, they took her anyway and discovered how much damage really had occurred. She had two broken ribs, a broken collarbone, a spine broken in three places, a crushed foot, a leg broken in eleven places, her shoulder was dislocated and her pelvis was broken in three places. It took approximately two years for Kahlo to recover from her injuries. .
             As soon as she was able to move her arms, she wrote letters to her boyfriend Gomez, telling him about how badly she was hurt and how much she had missed him. She begged him to come and visit her. Frida desperately sent him letter after letter expressing her feelings for him.
             Gomez never did come to visit. He didn't even take the time to write her a letter back. Frida was heartbroken and by the summer of 1926 she suffered a serious relapse. She then became very depressed, lonely, and some say immobile. .
             Since she had nothing else to do in the hospital, Kahlo talked her father into buying her art supplies so she could start painting. She had never studied art so she started by teaching herself to paint by looking at pieces of art from the Italian Renaissance and copying their work. Frida painted for any of the visitors or relatives that were willing to pose for her. Finding that there was nothing else to do with her paintings, Kahlo started giving them all away as gifts.
             After recovering from the accident Frida Kahlo got back out into the world. She married the famous Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. While she was married to Rivera she wanted to seem important to him so she decided to give up what she loved most, painting. .
             Frida knew that his murals were the most important things in his life and she wanted to respect that. She began to realize that she would always come second to Rivera's love for his art. After she realized this, her once independent view on life vanished. She became obsessed with her husband Diego Rivera and totally devoted her life to him.
