The Three Musketeers

The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas is a story about friendship, politics, and vengeance. The story takes place in 17th century France during the reign of Louis XIII. The main character, D'Artagnan, arrived in Paris, made close friends, became entangled in the politics of the day, and emerged stronger for it.
After receiving a letter of introduction and a blessing from his father, D'Artagnan, a Gascon scarcely twenty years old, left for Paris to attempt to gain a position in life. On his way to Paris, D'Artagnan stopped at Meung where he managed to become injured in a fight and have his letter of introduction stolen. After his recovery, he managed to make it to Paris with no further event.
When D'Artagnan arrived in Paris he set out for the hotel of M. de Treville, the captain of the musketeers. Despite D'Artagnan's lack of a letter of introduction, M. de Treville secured D'Artagnan a position in the guards of M. de Essarts and told D'Artagnan that he could join the Musketeers after a certain trial period or after performing a great act of heroism. After his interview with M. de Treville, D'Artagnan offended three musketeers "Aramis, Porthos, and Athos "and accepted to fight a duel with each of them. When they had all arrived at the spot of the fight, however, some of the Cardinal's guards arrived and threatened to arrest the Musketeers and D'Artagnan. The four would not stand up for this threat and, fighting bravely, incapacitated each of the challenging guards.
During the following weeks, the three Musketeers and D'Artagnan became very close friends. D'Artagnan and Athos were especially close in that D'Artagnan looked up to Athos almost as a type of father figure.
Since the four friends were not paid enough in their respective positions for their style of living, they were always on the look out for side jobs. While looking for one of these sources of money, D'Artagnan was asked by his landlord to find his wife, Madame Bonancieux, who was one of the servants of the queen.
