The Wonderful World Inside Us

"We"re off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of Oz." A favorite quote for any child from a favorite movie of every child. It is a dream of every child to be whisked away to a fantasy land, and Oz puts a name to the world in every mind, where adventure looms around every corner and victory is only a bucket of water throw away. A child's movie with pure fantasy and make believe, or is it. There seems to be an uncanny relationship between the story of the wizard of Oz. and the American world of the late nineteen thirties. The movie The Wizard of Oz has an underlying political meaning that supports the New Deal, a proposal brought to the forefront of American life by president Franklin Delano Roosevelt. .
             Characters.
Dorothy represents Middle America. It was the average American who was hit the hardest by the depression, not knowing where their next meal will come, and constantly wondering when the end to the hardships will cease. In the movie the wizard told Dorothy that the secret to getting back to her normal life was in her the entire time, she just had to find out how to unlock it. This is also the message Roosevelt gave the nation would be the end to the current crisis. Through all the twist and turns of their current dilemma, they would ultimately find out how to get back to a normal life, not through any magic potion or intervention with direct government influence, instead America will find out themselves how to get back to the life and values that make America great.
The wizard represents Roosevelt himself. The wizard has a double personality, just as Roosevelt had to have during such a traumatic period in American history. The wizard had side where he was projected as an intimidating, all-powerful being whose very presence put fear and more importantly respect into the hearts of all men. This image was necessary to possess for Roosevelt because he had to lead the American people through the events that were taking place, and with out the respect of the people this he could not take control of the situation.
