The Lord of the Flies: Ralph

In the book Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, Ralph, a twelve-year-old tall and thin English boy becomes a very important character. He is "fair-haired, and built like a boxer" (7) and has proven to the other boys, including himself that he can take charge. He is a strong and handsome boy who concentrates on making a good civilization; and at the same time, the other boys like to have fun and play. As a result, Ralph was elected leader of the island when they had an election at the beginning. He is also the only one thinking straight, unlike all the other boys. Also, Ralph and Jack are two different people who are always struggling for power, and always argue with each other. Ralph is a strong boy who tries very hard in making a good civilization with order and rules, but Jack tries to destroy everything he has worked for.
Ralph is a strong and handsome boy who concentrates on making a good civilization. He is described as "The boy with fair hair" (7). This suggests that he is blessed by nature with strength, luck, and grace. As a result, he is made leader of the boys and the island when they had an election. "The most obvious leader was Jack, but there was a stillness about Ralph as he sat that marked him out there" (22). They knew that Jack would be a good leader, but just looking at Ralph made everyone want to choose him because he is very handsome. He is very strong because he believes that everyone will get saved, and he tries to do anything to make this happen. Ralph's power and influence over the other boys are extremely secure at the beginning of the novel, but later changes.
Ralph is the only person who is actually thinking straight. At first, the boys loved their life without grown-ups. They played games and splashed in the lagoon. Ralph did not enjoy that they were playing more and not concentrating on the important things like maintaining the signal fire and building huts for shelter.
