Ancient Futures

Reading Ancient Futures has made me realize how privileged I am personally to live in the western culture and how easy it is for myself, and millions of others to forget how fortunate we are. It has shown me how easily westerners take for granted how accessible everything is to them. That we only have to come out and walk a minute to reach the train system, or that when I enter a supermarket every type of meat and vegetables that we might want is at our fingertip already pre- prepared. When we need some butter all we have to do is run out to the corner store and pick up a box, or when it gets chilly outside as the seasons change we enter a department store and have a mass variety of different brands and styles of clothing to choose from. This book has also been able to shine a new light on how wasteful we are as well. When we go out for dinner and the food doesn't suite our taste buds or if we are full and still have quite a bit of food left on our plate we throw it away without a second thought. Even though I am so grateful to be living in the western culture, there are some aspects of the Ladakhi culture that I am envious of. In some particular aspects you could say that the Ladakhi people are actually more privileged than we are. In the west you work because you have to work to survive, and so do the Ladakhi people but the one thing that differentiate them from us is that we work all year round, we have to work and not just work but work hard and we work to suite the needs of our employer not ourselves, where as the Ladakhi people work hard but at their own rate accompanied by laughter and songs. They are lucky because the get to throw festivals and parties very often and they are happy doing their jobs. Now when it comes to us we dread going to work most of the time, and we go because we need to make money to take care of ourselves and our families if we have one. Plus we cant forget the fact that because we live in such an industrialized culture that we must have money in order to obtain our mere necessities of life, such as food, water, shelter, clothing, etc.
