Killings

In "Killings" by Andre Dubus, the author explores revenge, loss, and consequences. The main character Matt Fowler has just been forced to bury his youngest son who was murdered by Richard Strout. Dubus engages his readers in a large conflict between Fowler and Strout after Strout gets out of jail on bail. Matt and his good friend Willis Trottier plot a revenge murder scheme without discussing the consequences. Matt's actions are motivated by his feelings of guilt, the support from others in the town, and his lack of trust in the justice system.
Regardless of the upcoming court victory for Matt and his family, he decides to take matters into his own hands because of his lack of trust in the justice system. Matt thought he wouldn't have to face Strout for many years, he didn't think about bail (Dubus 85). He couldn't conceive that the court system would allow someone who committed murder to walk the streets. For Matt, his family, and his friends this was torture. Matt's lack of trust grew when he began to remember a similar story of a woman who shot her husband and dropped him off a bridge. The woman spent a short time in jail and is now working as a secretary in a nearby town (Dubus 85). Matt couldn't bear facing his son's murderer in everyday life.
After the revenge murder, Matt's guilt begins to overwhelm him. Matt Fowler and his family gained a large amount of support and sympathy from others in their town. They lived in a small town in Massachusetts where members of the community ban together to help each other out during a time of need. In fact, they saw to it that Strout could get work in town. He had to tend a bar in nearby Hampton Beach where it is just tourist and kids (Dubus 85). Matt also has one of his good friends Willis Trottier helping him. Willis recognizes the pain that is being caused by Strout going on with his life as if nothing ever happened. Together they execute Strout's disappearance.
