Peace or No Piece

            
             There are several stereotypes throughout this play. The women are heavily targeted with these gender based assumptions. When Lysistrata orders the women to attack the men, she yells, "Call them nasty names! Don't be ladylike" (l. 745). This statement parodies the stereotype that women should be nice and not use foul language. This is a tool used by men to keep women the way we want them. We have taught our women to be nice and soft spoken so it's easier to dominate them. .
             Another example of this was when Lysistrata told the Commissioner of her plans to budget the money. The Commissioner is shocked at this statement, replying, "You"ll budget the money?" (l. 746), as if women are incapable of managing money. The Commissioner continued to be skeptical of the females" intelligence when he was told about the analogy of solving everything like they would untangle yarn. This was a very well written passage equating the state of their society to a ball of yarn. The Commissioner just wrote this wonderful idea off thought that this was just "woolly female logic" (l. 750).
             It shouldn't have been hard to make stereotypes about women in these times. Women hardly made any decisions on their own, which of one of the things that made this comedy burlesque since the women are so powerful in the play. Women were forced to marry a much older man in their early teens. It's no wonder so many opinions were formulated about them unjustly.
             Though most of the stereotypes are about women, there are also many stereotypes about men. The women assume that the men are too incompetent to solve their problems themselves: "[You men] manhandled another affair of state with your usual staggering incompetence" (l. 747). The women's beliefs are just since the men have been at war for a very long time and a resolution doesn't seem to be near. .
             Apparently every man just has to have sex every day. In the play every man has a large erection and apparently the only way to cure this affliction is to have sex with their wives.
