Racism

Yes, racism is the most influential oppression in American Society as a whole. It also has a more predominate affect on every area of life.
Racism has a predominate affect in our communities. People in our communities don't interact well with each other. They judge each other by what they wear, the way they talk, and by the color of their skin. Everything to me is based on who or what is better to one individual. I recall doing the same thing that society does, when I was younger. I would judge people by the way they act and even by their skin color. Now as an adult I know how to respect everyone and treat all mankind as equal. Shelby Stelle said, "I think the real trouble between the races in America is that the races are not just races but competing power groups." In response to this statement I would say, get to know an individual before judging them.
In addition, racism is also a factor in our schools. We have more schools that are all white or either all black rather than diversity schools. This doesn't give students a chance to learn other cultures. It doesn't give them the chance to get to know other students, but instead gives them the opportunity to misjudge one another. My opinion comes from experience. When I was in elementary school, my great-grandmother whom was white went on a class trip with me to the Philadelphia Zoo. Everyone thought that she was my babysitter and wanted her to be there chaperone. On the way back to the school my teacher told the children to thank my grandmother for a good time. The whole bus even the other chaperone said, "that's her grandmother." I was so embarrassed because they had found out that was my grandmother. The next day in school the children started saying that I was a nigger hater. I didn't think from that point on that I would be able to stay at that school. But my grandmother told me that people say all kinds of nasty, and mean things to hurt people.
