             Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience in favor of the Death Penalty.
             Thesis Statement: Today I am going to try and convince you why the Death Penalty is a good idea.
             Introduction.
             Attention material: David Westerfield was tried, convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of the seven year old Danielle Van Damme. Westerfield kidnapped this innocent girl from her home, sexually assaulted her, later killed her, and then dumped her body thinking that he would never get caught. Fortunately, he was. Now he has to face the consequences of his actions by being sentenced to the death penalty.
             Thesis statement: Today I am going to try and convince you why the Death Penalty is a good idea.
             Preview: My reasons are as follows: the death penalty can serve as a crime deterrent, the cost of the death penalty is efficient, and capital punishment is a form of justice. .
             (transition: my opening example is crime).
             Body.
             I. The process of taking another person's life is immoral and brutal.
             A. Many people think that if they commit murder, they will just get life in prison.
             1. 49% of defendants convicted of capital offenses had a jury return the death penalty (United 34).
             2. US DOJ did a survey and found from 1995-2000, DOJ sought the death penalty against 23% of defendants charged with crimes punishable by death. Those cases were submitted to the U.S. Attorneys to recommend either for or against the death penalty. Out of 682 cases submitted, the decision to seek the death penalty was 159 (Dep 8).
             3. In the 1800s, there was a group in India known as the "Thuggees". This group was known to murder people in the name of religion. According to Wesley Lowe, between 1829 and 1848, the British government was able to suppress the Thuggees by means of mass arrests and fast executions (5).
             4. The method of hanging murderers along the roadway assisted in deterring crimes across the country.
