Mr. Gradgrind and Mr. M"Choakumchild, the school inspector, are visiting schools. They meet a girl by the name of Cecilia "Sissy" Jupe (or as the men call her "Girl number twenty."). After asking her some questions they decide that the girl does not belong in school. Mr. Gradgrind and his fiend Mr. Bounderby go to Sissy's house to tell her father that he should pull her out of school. The meet up with the girl on the way there and she takes them to the house. The soon learn that her father sent her out to the store to get him some oil and he ran away while she was gone. Mr. Gradgrind agrees to take Sissy home with him and make her part of his family, and give her an education of facts. Gradgrinds children do not like this new adjustment or any part of their home life for that matter any more. The are tired of learning facts and want to just be able to wonder about things without fearing what their father will say to them. Tom says "when I go to live with old Bounderby, I"ll have my revenge.".
             Stephen Blackpool is a worker at Mr. Bounderby" s factory. He is married to an alcoholic, who sold almost all of their possessions in order to support her habit, but is in love with another worker named Rachel. One day Stephen comes home and finds that his drunken wife is in his apartment. The next day he goes to see Mr. Bounderby to ask him for some advice on how to help his situation. Bounderby tells that unless he has money there is no way to get rid of his wife legally. While leaving Mr. Bounderby" s house he meet up with "an old woman, tall and shapely still, though withered by time." The two of them start talking about Mr. Bounderby.
             One night Mr. Gradgrind tell Louisa that they need to have a very serious talk in the morning.
