Alzheimer

In this essay I will discuss Alzheimer's disease (A. Alzheimer's is the most common dementia or a neurological disorder in which parts of the brain stop working (Seppa 2003). Four million people in US currently suffer from A.D, and it is estimated that 22 million people around the world will be suffering from this type of dementia by 2025 (George-Hyslop 2000). Also, one in ten persons over 65 and nearly half of those over 85 have A.D. (George-Hyslop 2000). To start my essay I will first talk about what Alzheimer's disease is and its symptoms. Then I will discuss in detail the two main causes of Alzheimer's: amyloid plaques and tau tangles. Finally, I will finish my essay by discussing the possible treatments for A.D. .
In this paragraph I will discuss what Alzheimer's disease is and its symptoms. Alzheimer's is the most common dementia or deterioration of intellectual faculties, in which parts of the brain stop working, causing disruptions in memory, judgement, reasoning, and emotional stability (George-Hyslop 2000). Although Alzheimer's disease is not a normal part of aging process, the risk of developing the disease increases as people grow older (Seppa 2003). Alzheimer's arises because the normal processing of certain proteins goes terribly wrong, littering brain cells and the space between them with pieces of toxic protein (George-Hyslop 2000). In the early stages of the disease, patients have relatively mild problems learning new information (Travis 2000). And as the disease progresses, people may have difficulty remembering what month or year it is (Travis 2000). Eventually, Alzheimer's patients become completely incapacitated and unable to take care of their most basic life functions, such as eating and using the bathroom (Travis 2000). The other early symptoms of A.D. include forgetfulness, loss of concentration, unexplained weight loss, mild difficulties walking, changes in sexuality, and psychiatric problems including depression and apathy (Roberts 1999).
