How Stalin rose to power.

Their common goal was the opposition of Stalin. The three also tried splitting up the party. (De Jonge 214).
             Head of the party in Leningrad. This meant he had control of the party. Also the chairmen of the Comintern. Being of this high position he had some power. Nominated Stalin to be in charge of the Secretariat. This nomination shows cooperation.
             Was a previous Menshevik leader. This would later come back to haunt him.
             Tried in the Moscow trials on false charges. It was said that he and Trotsky and Kamenov had plotted assassinations of leaders. Shot after trials.
             Took part in the inner party opposition movements of 1925-1927. (Medveder 85, 175).
             2. Stalin.
             One move he made was taking quotes from Kamenov and Zinoviev out of context. He used these later to suggest that their views were incorrect and against the party.
             Started moving in on Kamenov's Moscow organization. In the summer of 1924 he had the secretary replaced. Some debate occurred but Uglanov did replace Zelensky. By the end of 1925 Uglanov had given his allegiance to Stalin. This destroyed the power base of Kamenov's work. Uglanov also openly opposed Zinoviev.
             Got the 14th Party Congress delayed. Politburo said Stalin should make the initial major speech. Zinoviev referred the matter to the central committee. Again Stalin go the vote. Shows Stalin's movement into power influence over opposition.
             Appealed to members of opposition that if they differed to the party discipline everything would be alright. This didn't happen, however, and when they did he would state they hadn't done enough.
             "and doubtless he frightened his colleagues with warnings with a possible coup. At any rate, by the autumn of 1925 Stalin seems to have been powerful enough to have made these colleagues assent to the cold-blooded murder of a distinguished comrade."(De Jonge 194) .
