The Patriot

The movie, The Patriot showed historical accuracy in several parts of the movie. When all of the men from Charleston gathered to the town meeting where they discussed whether to join the war effort and separate with England. Benjamin Martin (the main character) spoke of taxation without representation, which was a major factor in the war. "The American Revolutionary War was the outgrowth of the colonists' desire not to be taxed without the right to representation in the Parliament of England. Following the French and Indian War, England needed to recoup some of the cost of the war from the colonists. To the British it only seemed fair that the Colonies pay a share for their own defense (Moore)." This showed to me that the movie tried to make this as historical as possible. When this all happened they decided to begin the Continental army, which was made up of volunteers and would organize to fight off the British. "Determined to achieve independence, the colonies formed the Continental Army, composed chiefly of minutemen, to challenge Britain's large, organized militia (Britannica)." Also I believe the recreation of the clothes and the items that were used to farm and several other items were used accurately. The fighting was also I believe very realistic, especially the style of fighting and the manner in which they fought. The way each army lined up in lines and took turns at shooting each other precisely depicts the style of fighting used. The weapons used in the battle scenes also showed historical accuracy and how gruesome the weapons were. Even in the way that they attacked each other in hand-to-hand combat precisely depicts the gruesomeness of the times. When the battles were over they would bring all the soldiers to the homes of the people in the town and they would set up hospitals. The medicine at the time was not that good so they would do a lot of amputations to prevent disease.
