Parental Consent Required for Abortion

Many young women run the risk of being kicked out of their homes in the event that their parents find out that they are pregnant. Granted, it would be ideal if the girls thought of these consequences before having sex, but neglecting the possible consequences of one's actions should not have lead to irreversible less desirable outcomes. It is hard to imagine a less desirable situation than a young girl whom is abandoned and pregnant, or an expectant young mother being beaten by her parents.
In addition to the potential for an increase in child abuse and neglect, this bill is going to greatly increase the demand for illegal (and infinitely riskier) abortion methods. Even before Governor George Allen passed Virginia's first bill requiring parental notification prior to abortion there were thousands of cases in which young girls attempted suicide shortly after finding out they were pregnant. This is by far and away the least desirable outcome of any pregnancy; both the mother and unborn child are killed. One cannot over look the fact that many of these girls" worst fear concerning pregnancy is having to tell their parents. The humiliation a young girl feels when she is forced to tell her parents that not only has she had sex, but that she is in fact pregnant is more than enough to push a lot of them over the edge. If that were not enough, the nights spent thinking about how the life they once imagined for themselves is now erased because of the eventual arrival of a baby can cause severe emotional and psychological damage - sometimes resulting in suicide. If the House of Delegates is going to require that young women receive notarized parental consent before having an abortion, they are going to have a great increase in situations much more severe than the abortion of an unborn child. "Adult guidance may be preferable in the proper circumstances, but adult control is not" (<
