Depression

I interviewed one of my closest friends who is currently very depressed. The interview took place on the evening of Saturday, November 29th, 2003. The interview was over the telephone since we are many miles apart. We spoke in the early afternoon and we talked for about an hour. The conversation started out very friendly and cheery as it always does. We spoke of the days happenings and how our families were doing. We had a few interruptions during the call due to either my call waiting or his. My friend and I are both very honest people, and can carry an open conversation with one another. At time though he gets very moody and almost seems to back away from me and our friendship, but I've promised him from the start I will remain his friend through thick or thin. He is from a small suburb in Pennsylvania. He is 6"2 and has a muscular build. He is a highly educated man with a wife and two children. Our interview started off like this .
First can you tell me a little about yourself?.
I am a 43 year old male, married with two children. Most recent employment was in higher education, in media production. I"m currently unemployed. .
In a previous discussion you mentioned that you had problems with depression, correct? .
Yes, depression and anxiety. Depressive anxiety disorder is the term, I think. .
Under what circumstances did you first become aware that you had problems with depression? .
Well, I first started noticing symptoms about two years before I figured out what it was, probably about 10 years ago all together. It wasn't very often, but I"d get a tight, heavy feeling in my chest every once in a while. I had gone to the doctor to see what it was.had the EKG's and all, but there was nothing wrong, so it was pretty much dismissed as a pulled muscle or something similar. .
In 1992 I went to the hospital for what I thought was a heart attack. The feeling was similar to previous episodes, but was much more pronounced.
