The Hobbit

"They are inclined to be fat in the stomach: they dress in bright colors; wear no shoes because their feet grow naturally leathery soles and think, warm brown hair, like the stuff that grows on their heads. They have long, clever, brown fingers, good natured faces, and laugh deep fruity laughs." This is a brief description of the main character in J.R.R Tolkien's novel, The Hobbit, which tells a story of a non-adventurous hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, who is forced to take and adventure that would change his quite, little life. Bilbo's extreme cleverness, bravery, and intelligence becomes a great use throughout his journey. The story starts when Bilbo is ordered by Gandalf to Lonely Mountain, the start of an amazing adventure for such a clever little fellow. .
Bilbo Baggins" cleverness was extremely helpful to the dwarfs regaining their treasure. For example when Bilbo entered one of the many caves he came across, he did not expect to meet Gollum, nor did he expect to not be able to find his way out until he stumped Gollum with a riddle. Just when Bilbo thought that he didn't have anymore riddles something popped out of his mouth that Gollum would never be able to come up with the right answer to. He asked, "What is in my pocket?" Although Bilbo might have stumped Gollum, his cleverness could not stop there, for Gollum thought this was an unfair question and refused to show Bilbo the way out. In this case Bilbo used his nifty little ring he found to force Gollum to think he had left the cave, which made Gollum run to the door while Bilbo followed. Bilbo also came across another time where his cleverness took action. One morning Bilbo woke up caught in a spider web along with all the dwarfs. He thought for a while and then used his ring again to scare the spiders, that caused the trouble, to run away thinking they could not defeat a dagger named Sting . As a result to Bilbo's cleverness he had to be brave too, because he had to fight goblins and sometimes enter dark caves all by himself.
