Affirmative Action was created to ensure that minority students and workers would have the same opportunities that whites would have, and also ensure that colleges and work places have a variety of different cultures and backgrounds (Wolfe 32).
Two of the largest states in the union, Texas and California have already made Affirmative Action illegal. The following statistics are from two very elite universities of California campuses, Berkeley, and UCLA. AT Berkeley, the number of black freshmen declined 57% in 1999, And a massive 40% for Hispanics. AT UCLA the numbers were 43% decline for blacks and 33% for the Hispanics. The numbers are startling (Krauthhammer 30).
The number of minority students attending American colleges and universities jumped 48% in the 1990's, with all minorities posting double digit gains in college enrollment, according to a study by the American Council on Education. .
The Study which analyzed statistics from the U.S Department of Education, found that despite the greater numbers of minority students in college, blacks and Hispanics were behind whites and Asian Americans in graduation rates. It also found a gap between genders among blacks. From 1999 to 2000, college attendance among balck women under 25 increased 4%, to 43.9% but it declined for men by 5%, to 33.8%. The U>S also found that a total minority enrollment in institutions of higher education had increased to 4 million in 1999 from 2.7 million in 1990, with gains of 68.3% among Hispanics, 31.6% among blacks and 58.9% among Asian Americans. It also should be noted that "the report did not, however, explain the degree to which increases in the total student age population during the 1990's lifted enrollment figures.".
All of these statistics show how much the minority population is being discriminated against. While helping the minority population, there is some backlash that is occurring against the white portion of our population.
