Disney and Fairytales

The legitimacy of the text no longer mattered, as Zipes claims that to Disney, all importance was focused on the images which "intended to smash the aura of heritage" and turn the attention from the author to the animator. This is a very slanted way of looking at things, as the animated fairy tale is clearly a vehicle for animators to show their artistic ability, imagination and incredible talents to help create the ultimate tale. The animators" intentions are to draw in an audience for self-gratification, and, therefore, they will know that their talents are being shown off and admired. Intentions are, however, not to make the viewers forget about the actual story line, but to enhance it with amazing and lively characters. In a film with children as the target audience, it is important to keep them watching in an environment full of distractions such as noise and food. Characters must stand out, be bright in colour, music must be lively, often emotional, and action must be short and fun. Disney's animators accomplished this with the use of coloured gels and all sorts of new techniques that only a mastermind like Disney could develop with the limited technology available.
For his film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Disney spent thousand of dollars on research and the best equipment in order to make his first full-length animated fairy tale the best ever made in history. With a multiplane camera and totally new experiments with coloured gels, blurring focus, filming through frosted glass, and using the latest inventions in sound and music (437), Disney, and his partners, became "the kingpin of animation" (442). Zipes argues that Disney made some radical changes to the literary text in his film version of the fairy tale. Some of these modifications include making Snow White an orphan, having the Prince appear on a perfect white horse and singing about his love and devotion to Snow White, and having dwarfs that not only have actual names, but that are fleshed out and become main characters in the film.
