Atticus Finch; To KIll A Mocking Bird

Dubose saying horrible things to Atticus he still acts very kind towards her and when he talks about her addresses her as a lady as if he was talking to someone very formally as he does in court.
Atticus stands out among the people of Maycomb as a moral and caring man who respects even the ones that are often looked down upon in their society. He treats Calpurnia as a true member of his family showing her his full respect and trust. When Cal takes Scout and Jem to her church he is unaffected despite his sister's concern on the matter.
A major theme in the book that brings out Atticus" intelligence and good-nature is the trial of Tom Robinson who has falsely been accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. The fact that he is defending a black man brings out the worst in a lot of people in Maycomb. Atticus" moral conscience that was once admired among the people ultimately caused his fall with the people of Maycomb. They continuously ridicule him and his children saying things like: "Your father's no better than the trash he works for!" (102). With all the criticism he receives he still manages to uphold his dignity and respect for them: "They"re certainly entitled to think that, and they"re entitled to full respect for their opinions but before I can live with other folks I've got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience" (105). Despite their differing opinions to racial equality Atticus always looks for the good in people keeping his head high and following his own advice that he shares with his children: "No matter what anybody says to you, don't you let "em get your goat" ( .
Through the days following up to the trial Scout and Jem begin to realize that Atticus didn't take the job because he had to but because he wanted to defend Tom for the sake of justice. They would sometimes ask him if he could win the trial and Atticus would reply with yet another piece of wisdom: "It's when you know you"re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.
