Critical commentary on D.H. Lawrence's poem "Elemental"

Lawrence was a well-established writer and even now he has many fans. He wrote many works, which included the poem "Elemental", "My Naughty Book", and "Rose Of All The World". D.H. Lawrence was seen as eccentric as a young man due to his lack of work and love for literature. .
Elemental is defined in the dictionary as being concerned with powerful natural forces. The poem is concerned with the way society behave "lovable" (line 1) Lawrence appears to be very discontented with the way society is artificial and desires people to change. The main thread that runs through the poem is nature, which is exemplary in the title "Elemental". .
Lawrence has made it very evident in this particular poem that he has extreme dislike for how society is displaying itself, "Why don't people just lay off being loveable, Or thinking they are lovable, or wanting to be lovable, And be a bit elemental instead?" Lawrence has an almost bitter tone in this first stanza; he creates a tone for the reader to carry with them all the way through the poem. Lawrence has created an imagery, which is almost instantaneously captivating, the use of the word "lovable"(line 1) gives the audience a picture of happy and pleasant people, and with the tone of voice combined he gives the reader the impression that this happiness is sickly to watch. Lawrence does not just mention it, there are several references to the word "lovable" (lines 1 and 2) he uses this as a tool to of get the readers to view that kind of behaviour as wrong.
The main theme is nature; Lawrence gave the poem a title, which also means natural. "Elemental" has many references to the "elements" (line 4) and how they act. He uses nature to criticise society he poses questions on why society cannot act more natural like the elements, "Since man is made up of the elements, Fire, and rain, and air and live loam, And none of these are lovable, But elemental" (lines 4-7) Lawrence names the elements and says they are not "lovable" (line 6).
