In the 20th century there has been a rapid development of technology. Translation is one of the many fields benefiting from it. The only tools of a modern day translator are no longer his trusty notebook and dictionary. Nowadays translators use computer programs to aid them in their work.
The internet is full of different online dictionaries, but most of them are incomplete and only few of them are English v/s Latvian, which is why they wont be mentioned in this work. The reader will be introduced only to professional translation equipment. Unfortunately professional software is expensive, therefore only two Latvian translation businesses could be accounted of using it. One of them is the government backed Translation and Terminology Centre and the other is the translation agency Strombus. They both use Trados MultiTerm terminology management software. Another type of translation technologies is interpreting technology, such as video interpreting. In this work the author will try to give a brief insight in both translation software and interpreting technology. .
2. Translation software.
The company Trados offers the best and most up-to-date translation software. The product used by the Translation and Terminology Centre and Strombus is Trados MultiTerm. However, their newest product is called Trados 6 Freelance. As the title already suggests, it has been designed specially for freelance translation specialists. It is a translation memory software and it consists of the following parts:.
