             Mary was the child of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon.
             She was disowned by her father because of his divorce to her mother and was raised separately from her siblings. .
             Edward VI, her brother, was protestant. Mary was Roman Catholic. In Edwards' reign the religion in England was protestant. .
             During Mary's reign she changed all the churches in England back to Roman Catholic. .
             She replaced protestant priests with Roman Catholic ones and changed the bible back to Latin from English. .
             Many people did not like this and many Protestants fled abroad as a result of being threatened to become Roman Catholic or be severely punished. .
             Mary executed Thomas Cranmer who was a senior member of the church. She executed him because he granted Henry the divorce the pope would not give to him. She wanted him to suffer, she hated him. .
             It was only after Cranmer was burnt people thought this was unfair because he was a senior member of the clergy. .
             The execution of Cranmer turned many ordinary people against Mary's policy of persecuting Protestants. .
             In the 150 years before Mary reigned an average of 1 person per year was executed for heresy in England. In 3 ½ years Mary executed an average of 2 people per week. 284 people in total were burned during her reign. .
             1/3 of Marys victims were members of the clergy 1/5 of victims were women and the rest were common people. .
             Other monarchs executed people they didn't like or had broken the law. Even her own father had executed his best friend because he believed that Henry was not rightfully head of the Church of England. .

             Everyone in England was happy when Mary became queen but they were even happier when she died. .
             I don't think Mary deserved her nickname because other monarchs executed people too. But the main reason Mary burned people was to purify their souls and make them Roman Catholic before they died so they would get to heaven. She did it to be kind.
