Atlantis

.
             A BRIEF HISTORY OF ATLANTIS.
The tradition of Atlantis, forged in early antiquity, has always fascinated the popular imagination and still does thousands of years later. This utopian society, as once described by Plato, has survived through myth and lore for thousands of years. What makes the lost continent of Atlantis enticing is that people want to believe. As a race, humans want to believe that what some think was the greatest civilization ever, existed 5000 years prior to recorded history. Curiosity drives mankind to want to be proud to say that their ancestors flourished in an unimaginable utopian society so that people can identify with it and make some sort of connection: "It is almost as if, realizing that there now exist improved methods of archeological investigation, modern man expects to receive confirmation of his own lost past and is waiting for modern science to fill him in on the gaps in the common family history . . . with it's implied reaching back for knowledge of our past and the golden age of humanity." (Santos) .
So where did this eighth wonder of the world come from? According to the account in Plato's Timaeus, the island was described to Athenian statesman Solon by an Egyptian priest who maintained that Atlantis was larger than Libya and Asia Minor combined. The priest said a civilization flourished on Atlantis around the 10th century BC, and that the nation conquered all the Mediterranean civilizations except the Athenians. From Solon's account were passed on to Plato, who recorded their stories in two of his writings: the Timaeus and the Critias. It is from these two dialogues of Plato, mainly the Critias, that the large majority of all Atlantis information originates. .
What Plato said and what Plato meant have been interpreted in many different ways, these writings have been identified as the origin of confusion regarding Atlantis. In reading numerous texts on Atlantis (there exist currently over 10,000 works), a pattern starts to develop in writing style.
