The Name of the Rose

The Name of the Rose is a film directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud that was released in 1986. The film is set in a monastery and centres around a murder mystery that is plaguing the monks there. William of Baskerville, a man whose reputation for being somewhat of an investigator has earned him an invitation to this dreary place, spends the movie looking for clues to find the murderer. The title of the movie however, has nothing to do with William or the murder mystery that the movie is trying solve. On the contrary, is the one happy area of the movie; the bit of romance that has been strung through it. William of Baskerville has brought with him a teenage boy, whose care and education have been left in his hands. This young boy who goes by the name of Adso is the one who discovers the said "rose".
In this film, the "rose" is a gypsy girl that Adso first sees on the hillside, gathering the charity thrown away by the monks. It is clear at that point that she will become an important person to his storyline and they cannot take their eyes off each other. Later, they meet when they are both hiding in one of the kitchens of the monasteries. Adso, expected to become a monk, has never experienced the opposite sex and is quite fascinated by her. She in turn is rather interested in him as a young beautiful man and seduces him. Although their encounter was purely sexual, Adso develops a deeper feeling for this girl as he later expresses to William. .
Adso never learns her name, but he says later that he never forgot her. He apparently came to think of her as a rose: a delicate, beautiful flower, bewitching to the beholder. It is my belief that Adso became rather poetic as he got older, as poets often name their loves as roses. This reference reminded me of Robert Burns "My love is like a red, red rose" and especially Frost's "The Rose Family" when he writes "you of course are a rose, but were always a rose" I also think she was a flower in his memory because she blossomed and grew more beautiful and beloved with time.
