In The Snack Bar

The poem "In the snack bar" gives an excellent insight into the less pleasant side of urban life. The poet, Edwin Morgan, helps us to understand the themes of the poem, which are determination and also how other people can be reluctant to help those who truly need their help, by the use of language and different poetic techniques.
In the first stanza of the poem he uses techniques to show what the blind man is like. He uses caesura to describe the man getting to his feet. .
"He is up as far as he can get. The dismal hump.
looming over him forces his head down.".
This is effective because it shows how the man has to pause as he hasn't got the strength to push himself all the way up. Another technique is used in the next line to describe the man is the simile "like a monstrous animal caught in a tent". This very effective because it gives us an idea of why people may get scared of him and therefore be reluctant to help him. Edwin Morgan then uses caesura again to show the swaying of the old man and how he is determined to get up but is finding it difficult. .
Later in the stanza he makes us understand that the man likes to be independent by telling us how his stick was "once painted white" showing that he had tried to do it himself. Straight after telling us this, the poet tries to make us feel sorry for the man in the following way:.
"Long blind, hunchback born, half paralysed".
Although this may make people feel sorry for the man it may also make them scared of him. The very last line of the stanza gives us a great insight on how the man likes his independence." .
             "I want-to go to the-toilet." .
This shows that the man is trying to get on with his life but the simple things we take for granted can be very difficult for him and so he has to tell people even the most embarrassing things in the hope that someone will help him.
