On the 5th and 6th of December there was a big Christmas festival in "Balboa park". Several bands and choirs played and performed on both days. The band I watched was called "Groovelily" which is three members band. They played piano and voice, drums. A viper is something like a violin with 6 strings. Of course the band mostly played their own songs which were great. Groovelily has their own sound I would consider to be a mixture between funk, pop and country. The piano often used funky chords. For example instead of using a simple c-major chord he mostly added tones to make the sound more groovy and funky. The beat given by the drums and the piano was very lively. Besides the funky part I mentioned pop, too. I would consider their voices as kind of slow pop ones. The pianist and the lady mostly played the viper and sang together. When he and she were doing the solo part, another one would make the backing vocals. In a couple of songs the drummer sang, too. And as we all know it is pretty hard to sing while playing the drums. But he did a great job. The viper made the country part in their sound. All their songs were built up like normal ballads or pop songs which mean verse, chorus, bridge, and sometimes solo parts. In the solo parts piano and viper changed fluently and they played together. Mostly they were using the blues schedule for improvising. .
I really admire the band for making that full and complex sound, even though they are just 3 people. It was great sound and harmony. However I thought they could need at least a base player or a guitarist. It might make sound better.
