Three Sisters

Her idiosyncrasies in this act are not as prominent in this act as other acts, again because she is holding off and not showing her whole self to the audience or other characters. When speaking in the role her voice needs to be firm and clear at all times but perhaps a little quiet and soft to emphasise that she is a nervous guest of the house but at the same time wants to assert some power and control. Her tone especially in the first vocal exchange should be full of worry and nerves, after all one of the sisters has just criticised her choice of belt. The most obvious hint the her will to have control and power comes when the others are making fun of her and andre and she runs from the table. Because she is unable to retaliate and connot control the situation she runs away from it but at the same time retaining control and power because she has removed herself and she knows André will follow. When performing this vital section to the act it must be kept in mind that she does want power and control. When she is talking with André away from the table she has to appear deeply upset and hurt by what has just happened. This is essential in the audience reaction to her and how it must change in Act 2. The way she appears awkward must all be performed in body language and very naturalistically because it would be easy to perform this awkwardness and shy exterior with a bit of melodrama but it is essential everything is played subtly. Although when she is first checking her appearance and talking of being late with herself it is plain to see she is nervous and shy. The key to showing awkwardness is how the Section at the table is performed. She needs to appear to be awkward around the informal'-as Natasha describes it-behavior at the table and then she must appear to be awkward while she is being made fun of. This whole section is the best section to give the audience the feel of Natasha's awkwardness.
