Legalize Weed

If one thinks of this, it becomes very logical seeing it is the most popular illicit drug, that the first illegal drug most will encounter is marijuana. It turns out that most people who smoke marijuana have tried alcohol and/or nicotine well before the legal age of use. Data from the 2000 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, from the US Department of Health and Human Services also helps to dispel this theory. According to the data on the data chart created from the survey, the use of marijuana would not lead to the use of more harmful substances.
With evidence like this, it is hard to understand why marijuana is continued to be illegal in this country. .
The legalizations of this substance can have many benefits to the common good of all people. Legalization of cannabis could help our economy, fix prison overcrowding, as well as aid those who could benefit from the substance medically. Our government currently spends over $19 billion a year on the drug war. Of this, over half goes toward enforcement while less than a quarter actually goes to prevention and treatment. This seems to be an awful waste of money that could be allocated more efficiently else ware. As it has been shown, marijuana is the most popular drug in the US. Logically, the majority of enforcement will be used on marijuana. A study by The RAND Corporation has shown that drug law enforcement costs 15 times more than drug treatment to achieve the same results in society. If we reduce spending by initiating more programs that accomplish the same result that their more expensive counterparts do, we can save billions of dollars that could go to other expenditures like highway management or education. .
The National Origination for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) reports that the #5 cash crop in the state of Michigan in the year 1997 was marijuana. According to NORML, in 1997 roughly 61 units of marijuana were produced in Michigan.
