The reason for me selecting this case is because of how recent it is and how big the case has become. Also another reason for me picking this is because Lakers are my favorite sports team so I thought it would be interesting to do something about them.
In this case Kobe Bryant is accused of forcibly raping a 19 year old girl.
"On June, 30, 2003, At the Lodge and Spa at Cordillera in nearby Edwards" (http://www.nynewsday.com,2003,P.1). This came about when Bryant and two male associates check in at the lodge and spa where the accuser worked at. Then Later on that night the accuser allegedly said she gave Kobe and the two body guards accompanying Kobe, a tour of the place. After the tour Kobe then later invited her to his room where there was "mutual flirting (http://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/10/09/bryant.case/index .html, 2003, P.1).
Some time ago after the flirting she then asked Kobe for his autograph he then stated for her to come by later for it and he will then give the autograph to her. Before she left she and Kobe began kissing each other which she agreed on then it started to escalate. When this happen she started to become afraid and wanted to leave the room but then Kobe became violent by grabbing her neck and started to sexually assaulting her asking her not to tell anyone at the end. .
During the time of his arrest Kobe was let out on a $25,000 bail which the judge ordered him not to leave to leave the country or even the town. But later on since Kobe was a basketball player and plays state to state the judge granted him to leave town to play basketball but was order to come in on certain dates for the preliminary hearing no matter what. During the preliminary Kobe's defense team will try to move the case to a more neutral place because of how only "Three percent of African Americans live in Colorado" (http://www.chattablogs.com _events.html, 2003, P.1). The extra legal factor is that the great majority of the people that live in Colorado are white which will ultimately lead to the majority of jury being white which would put Kobe Bryant at a great disadvantage because of the case against him.
