This is because the students are passive in the lecture, maybe just copying down notes without thinking of practical implications. If they have not read there notes soon after writing them there will be even less chance of them remembering the lecture. .
Of course sometimes, integrating theory with practice is very hard to achieve such as a biology lesson concerning such complicated areas as gaseous exchange at the alveolar or the Krebs cycle where complicated microscopic processes are taking place. Another example would be a lesson in which the teacher explains how the digestive system works. The teacher would find it very hard to perform a practical demonstration to show this because the processes involved occur internally and are quite complicated. In this case the learner has to use some amount of imagination when trying to visualise exactly what is happening and how it is happening. While the process is being explained a diagram to show the different stages of digestion would be very useful. By providing a visual aid there is a better chance that the student will understand the process and remember it. .
It is also harder to incorporate practicals into some lessons such as Sports Psychology, in contrast to others such as Anatomy and Physiology. This is mainly due to the theoretical nature of Sports Psychology, which is all about the mind and the processes associated with it. It tries to give an explanation of our behaviour in all kinds of sporting situations. All of this can be very hard to show in a physical form where learners can see, and more importantly, understand what is happening. .
Within the realms of Anatomy and Physiology and many other areas within Sports Science however, there is a great opportunity for learners to become familiar with practicals because this deals with how people walk, throw, kick and so on. Learners can examine each other (within reason) when studying areas like the skeletal muscle system because you can feel many of the muscles within the skeletal muscle system contracting and relaxing when various movements are made.
