In this excerpt a man is having a conversation with another man by the name of Socrates. The man tells Socrates that he does not need another teacher because he has enough already. Socrates replies to the man telling him that, basically, teachers are worthless. The whole world is out there and it is meant to teach you, no teacher can teach you what experience can. Socrates says that the man is full of preconceptions and to actually learn what the world is like, he has to rid himself of all of those and start from the beginning again. Socrates finishes up by saying that everything that the man will ever need to know is within him; the secrets of the universe are imprinted within the cells of his body. Socrates says that he won't "teach" him; he wants to show the man "body wisdom". I believe this excerpt relates to Socrates because of what has been said in the excerpt is basically what is in our notes. Socrates believes that to learn, one must go farther than just books. He also says this in the excerpt, "Your only recourse has been to read books and listen to experts and hope that they are right." Socrates believes that not everything can be taught, experience can teach things no teacher will ever be able to. .

The second excerpt from Embraced by the Light talks about people judging others before they know truly who they are. In the excerpt a man is asked what he sees lying on the ground, he replies that he sees a drunken bum lying on the sidewalk in his wallow. The guide that asked him the question then shows the man who the bum really is; the bum turns out to be a great spirit in heaven. In heaven the bum is a magnificent man, full of light, and a being of which love emanated. The bum was sent to earth as a reminder to a nearby attorney of what life really is; the bum reminded the attorney of the needs of others. This excerpt describes the philosophical views of two people: Descartes and Plato.
