Articles of Confederation

The Articles of confederation was the first rough draft of the present constituition of the United States of America. The Articles had many weaknesses, but they still possessed some strengths. Many people say that the Articles of Confederation were important because they were a model of what a constitution ought to be. They were responsible for setting up the constitution as it is today, and overall, they were an important documents. .
The main problem with the Articles of Confederation was that it failed to give power to the federal government. The new states needed to unift under one constitution, they needed to establish a soverign central government. The Articles of Confederation was a significant step toward national unity. Most American historians said that the Articles of Confederation were insignificant because of the subordinate position occupied by the central government. The new states needed a central government. Congress had little power to impose upon the states. They could not regulate taxes, and this led to states taxing other states. It could not enforce power upon individuals, unify foreign and domestic policies, pass navigation regulations, or enforce treaties. The Articles had many flaws. .
Because of its weaknesses, the government demanded little respect. The government's reputation was further degraded by its inability to cope with internal uprisings such as Shays's Rebellion. Many capable statesmen, Robert Morris, John Jay, and Benjamin Lincoln were confused by this organization of government, while others, equally able, shunned service in Congress in favor of state politics. The unanimity rule enabled one state to prevent the passage of a measure desired by all the others. The system of passing laws was inadequate. The larger states had more power in voting than the smaller states. New York had the power to overrule any vote by voting against the proposed law.
