Sigmund Freud

In every book I researched Freud's fear of trains was his most well known phobia and it staid with him until his death. It was not the train itself he was afraid of, to Freud and his perception it was deeper than that. Freud would always arrive to the station one hour early, to make sure he did not miss his departure. Freud later realized as he analyzed his problems that traveling is a symbol of independence and leaving ones security. Sigmund also would always travel with a friend or a loved one. Rarely did he travel alone, the anxiety would be far too high for him to overcome. Once again the symptoms of this phobia must be dissected to understand the phobia itself.(3) .
Freud was the oldest of eight siblings and was the most attached to his mother. Although he fit the criteria of a "mommas boy", it was Sigmund's love for his mother that made him so insecure of that love. At a young age Sigmund developed a love for his mother so strong it led to sexual feelings towards her. Sigmund's mother was very loving and protective of all her children, but it was Sigmund who was her favorite. Being her first born son, Sigmund was very possessive and insecure of his mothers love and was at times extremely jealous of his siblings when they received attention. This attachment between Freud to his mother is important in understanding Freud's character. Freud explains the attachment to his mother as being one of the most powerful feelings in a man, the crave of being cared for, protected and loved by his mother. But it is this same love that drives a man towards dependency and the fear of this love coming to an end. This dependency and insecurity are key structures to fully understand Freud's character and most importantly his theories.
