Australia and Assimilation

As more and more migrants came to Australia until Approximately 1/5th of Australia's population was born overseas.
             "Immigration's the key".
Prior to 1945 the White Australia Policy prevented anyone to enter Australia unless they were from Britain.
             However.
In 1945 the government felt that the population needed to grow so they got rid of the White Australia Policy and came up with a new policy called "Assimilation". With the introduction of this new policy any person in Europe can enter Australia as long as they gave up their culture and learned to live the Australian way of life. "These people didn't speak English but they were "white", so they were acceptable to the government".
"Non-white" people were still not accepted from entering Australia under the Assimilation policy, but a dictation test which was use to discriminate against the non-English speaking people, was abolished with the passing of the migration act in 1958. .
The Assimilation policy was passed so if Australia were attacked we would be more prepared both economically and defensively. .
             Aims of Assimilation.
The government of Australia introduced Assimilation because after WWII Australia was found to have a rather shaky defence and economy the government realising this thought up ways that they could get Australia to a level where we could defend ourselves if we are attacked. We feared that some of the Asian countries might go on a land grab and try to expand their country.
So the government decided that they way to increase our defence and economy was to gain population (More People = More Money). Since that they did not want to wait for Australia to gain population through natural increase then they need some other form of population gain. "Migration", before this migration was only open to British residents but with the introduction of Assimilation this now meant that any resident in Europe was allowed over to Australia as long as they gave up their culture and learnt to live the Australian way of life.
