As I Lay Dying

"I would look forward to the times when they faltered, so I could whip them-, quoted Addie. This is a cold-hearted mother filled with resentment for her children and her husband. Never truly having the desire for a family this lonely woman was driven insane and chose to believe there wasn't anything after death for her, she believed in a created concept of nothing ness.
Addie was a cold-hearted mother in many ways. In the beginning of her passage she describes a child leaving with a dirty, snuffling nose. This set the stage for how she felt about children. After she had a son Cash she thought "living was terrible, and that motherhood was invented by someone who had to have a word for it-. This is a very powerful and hurtful phrase if Cash had ever heard it. Any kind of loving mother would be proud of her child and be content of her capability to bear children. Loving mothers think of their children as gifts not as burdens or "interruptions of quiet time- suggests Addie. She again seemed very cold because after she gave birth to Jewel she thought of him as her favorite. Why would a mother pick a favorite and let it be known who her favorite was? (Although she doesn't seem to state directly that Jewel is her favorite, the narratives of the other characters seem to give it away). Children should not have to feel inadequate in the eyes of their mother. Speaking from my own morality, children are to feel equal if not superior in the eyes of a good mother. Addie also described her pregnancy as trickery, and it was Anse who had tricked her, I believe her exact words were "she thought she would kill him after she had Darl-. I believe this woman only took Anse as a husband to embarrass her own father. Addie said, "I would hate my father for having ever planted me-. I understood this as he fertilization, birth, and growth of Addie herself. From this I interpreted Addie grew up resenting anyone and everyone who was capable of emotion while Addie deems "words are just a shape to fill a lack-.
