hamlets sanity

Hamlet is visited by his father's ghost and is told that his own brother killed him. Hamlet is disturbed by this visitation and then attempts to seek revenge on his father's death. Throughout Hamlet seeking his revenge, he is accused of being insane. Hamlets character could be called, and is called by many, a lunatic. Hamlet, during the course of the play, acted as if he was insane to cover up his actions, and to trick those following, trying to catch him in his plot. Looking into Hamlets actions and thoughts it is clear he had reason for his actions. .
Insanity is defined as exhibiting unsoundness or disorder of mind; not sane; mad; deranged in mind; delirious; distracted; no ability to reason. Hamlets character does display an act of these characteristics but it is only that, an act. It would be impossible if he were sane to act as a sane person in some events. He shows a sign of reason from the beginning. When he sees the ghost of his father he does not believe it is his father. He believes it is the devil. "May be the devil- He shows the ability to rationalize in this scene because he does not believe it is his father and also he tries to rationalize that it was the devil or his own thoughts and emotions taking over. Hamlet also shows the ability to reason when he has the chance to kill Claudius. When Claudius is praying Hamlet begins to sneak up on him. He was going to kill him. He could have gotten away with it because there was no one around. Hamlets own thoughts stop him in mid act. His inner thoughts tell him he has the perfect opportunity to kill, but then comes back and he finds a reason not to. He thought that he should not kill him now while he is praying. He thought he would kill him in sin. This way he would not go to heaven but straight to hell. This shows Hamlets ability to reason because he is rationalizing the situation. He had the ability to choose between the right times to commit an act.
