Most information comes from myths and Homer's works such as the Illiad and the Odyssey . In myths, Sparta was said to have been formed by Lacedaemon, son of Zeus and Tygete. Sparta married Lacedaemon and formed the city-state Sparta. In Homer's tales, Sparta is described as the territory between Mount Taygotos and Parnen. During 1100 BC. Dorians conquered the area and remained in control. During 8 century BC Sparta was a cultural city, like Athens. Around 700 bc , war with the Messians broke out. It started because Sparta needed growing lands to supply food to its growing population, Sparta annexed the land of their neighboring city-state, Messiena . The war was won by Sparta, but it was almost in ruin after the war. New changes were needed in running this newly acquired land and people. Also the overwhelming amount of people that the Spartians were in control of was one to ten.
