What is Poetry

That was just the problem, people's ideas of the time were just that; dreams could be easily dreamt, and never made to come true. Apparently Hughes is trying to explain how a person that is trapped in this world may be able to disregard their dreams and deal with the fact with the use of simile, which is the comparison of to things using "like" or "as". Hughes relates different coping methods to things such as body wounds. If someone can't pursue their dreams does it dry up? Does it become so faint that it will never be thought of again? Maybe the dream breaks up like a raisin, damaged and old, but the essence of it is still intact. Later there are lines about festering like a sore. This could be understood as a dream that exist, but never receives the attention it needs and therefore never goes away. The dream will fester like an itch on your arm, always making you think about it, while you are still able to do other things. Maybe it crusts like sweet syrup; putting up a highly protective facade to hide a great deal of hurt underneath. Perhaps the dream brings you down like a heavy load, never letting a person accept their duties of life. There is also the thought that the dream may explode breaking up into millions of ideas for others to ponder upon.
Although the poem is short in length, it has a great meaning behind it. If you look at the history behind this poem it becomes evident that this had a great impact on history itself. Hughes was writing in the first half of the twentieth century. He helped shape the Harlem Renaissance, an eruption of African-American cultural expression in that section of New York City in the 1920s. The title of Hansberry's play comes from Hughes's poem which had a double purpose. It further underlines and describes her play's themes, and it also emphasizes the heritage of black American literature, a heritage that portrays a very different conception of America than the literature of dominant white culture.
