             The Movie, "Standing On My Sister's Shoulders" depicted the life of mainly black women in southern Mississippi during the civil rights movement. This movie gave an in depth look at the significant roles that black women played in order to gain equal civil rights status. Women in many pioneering fields are often over looked or not given full credit as a male counterpart would. This movie wasn't just a simple account of what the blacks did to survive from the KKK members, the segregation laws (Jim Crow), or the voting rights, but it served as a reminder that we are still far from equality among sexes and races. .
             The main theme of the movie was "tired of being sick and tired." Black women were often ignored during freedom marches and faced more adversity and hardship while being held as a slave, in other words they were a group of second-class citizens- second to the black man and of course to the whites. Many people only remember the black male leaders such as Martin Luther King, but this changed when Rosa Parks in 1955 decided courageously to refuse to give up her seat to a white man. This sparked one of the largest protests in black civil right history. A massive boycott began because one black woman decided to say no. .
             Churches were the main and often only meeting places for blacks to congregate and draw up plans to gain the right to vote. Black women were often the leaders in these secret meetings and the "soul feeding" music that they sung. These meetings of course leaked out and were now threatened or destroyed by KKK members, but the black women pressed and sung their hearts out to comfort themselves and others. They were the life supporters of the Civil Rights Movements. Women were also beat up in jail and treated just like the black men were. .
             These black women pressed on and pressed on hard. After nearly a decade of fighting, these women finally got the right to vote in the state of Mississippi- probably the most dangerous place in the south during that time.
