identity

The diversity in public schools of California has become a melting pot, mixed with children of various ethnic backgrounds. With the rapid growth of minorities, many Asian children are finding difficulty in finding their identity amongst the wide choices of cultures in California. .
Asian Americans had been a large part of California's history. The first generations of Asians had been known to be closely knit with their values and traditions. While the first generations of Asian families had learned to assimilate in America, their children, the second generation, may have difficulty in identifying themselves as an individual. .
Asian American children who grew up in the diverse schooling of California may find it difficult to choose the culture of their choice. The children face many options of identity such as; the traditional values their parents maintained, the new trendy Hong Kong style, the hard-rock white American culture, the hip-hop Black American fad, as well as many others. The Asian children who face these choices, more often than not, are lost in a frenzy where too much choice affects who they want to become. In high school, a Chinese teenage boy who goes to high school for the first day may look for groups or cliques to associate himself with. Although there are other Chinese boys in the high school, he faces challenges in choosing which group to inquire upon. He may choose to hang out with the hip-hop group, but then he would not be able to socialize with the other groups. The reason being is the difference in styles and interests. Hip-Hop kids never listens to Chinese music nor would they be associated as Chinese. .
The various choices of cultures and groups are not negative circumstances, but it does harness a lost in identity, in which children of non-diverse communities have no difficulty to concede. Schools with one major ethnic group would most likely have one major culture or style.
