The Devil and Tom Walker

Darkness had just fallen upon the earth, and the stars lit the evening sky. The fort that the Indians used to sacrifice white men's carcasses to the evil spirit seemed to be illuminated and set apart from the rest of the swampy area. A troublesome and melancholy atmosphere lingered in the staleness of the air.
The woman known as Tom Walker's wife set foot on this offering ground with pictures of riches floating around her head. She wanted to be wealthy even if she had to abandon her miserly husband. She saw a cloven skull lying on the ground and frowned with disdain when a great voice startled her. "What do you want of this place, woman?" boomed the black woodsman.
Tom Walker's wife would never let anyone address her in this fashion. She would refuse any condescending tone until the day that she died. She simply stated, "Excuse me, but you are quite rude to visitors. Is it correct to assume that you are the man who saw my husband just the other day?".
"Be that as it may, I don't see what your involvement has to do with that matter.".
"Listen, I don't care who you are or that Tom claims that you are the devil. I just want the opportunity to be rich and to be quite wealthy for the rest of my mortal life. I don't want to waste much time if it can be helped.".
"Is that so? I am so tremendously touched by your story, but this is a man's job. I am not a charity, you mere wretch of a woman. I am in this for a profit myself, and you don't meet the standards and qualifications. Why don't you just go home and clean the house and perhaps even make some dinner? That is something that is more in your league.".
Tom's wife was outraged. How could a complete stranger insult her in such a way she would never let anyone else? Her first reaction was the shame as it would be if it were her own husband. Immediately she spit in the devil's face and cursed him for all that he seemed to be. She then reached out to smack and claw across the devil's face, but of course, he was ready for this now.
