The magic in this dream of Ultima's sudden appearance on the plain helps Tony mature because he knows that she will be watching out for him in the difficult times to come. The next dream again encompasses the struggles between his different families and his future. In his vivid nightmare, the raging ocean and the moon represent the sides of his family. Tony is walking along the beach, which and the carcasses of sinners are strewn about. The moon comes down upon him and he sees his mother in the moonlight. She tells him that he was baptized in the holy water of the moon, so they are purified of all sin. His father shouts, "Lies!. Antonio was not baptized in the holy water of the moon, but in the salt water of the sea!" (112) While his parents continue their altercation, Tony pleads and pleads to know the answer to which side of the family he is destined to succeed. As his pain grows, Ultima without warning ceased the raging powers of the heavens and the powers of the earth. She explains that "The sweet water of the moon that falls as rain is the same water that gathers into rivers and flows to fill the seas. Without the waters of the moon to replenish the oceans there would be no oceans. And the same salt waters of the oceans are drawn by the sun to the heavens, and in turn become again the waters of the moon. Without the sun there would be no water formed to slake the dark earth's thirst" (113). The magical elements in this dream are the conflicting powers of the sea and the moon. Ultima's magical powers in this dream is closing the gap in Tony's eyes, so that he can begin to mend the rift between the Marez and Luna families. Tony is maturing mentally by being able to see that the families, although very different, are one, and he belongs in both equally because he is both. " "You have seen only parts" she finished, "and not looking beyond the great cycle that binds us all.
