British Colonies in North America were separated by religious tolerances. Separation of these colonies could be divided into 3 areas. The first area would be New England, followed by middle colonies, and lastly the southern colonies to boot. Each portion was divvied into colonies with their own religious backgrounds.
New England could be divided up into Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and some others along with those. Connecticut, Puritans through and through decided to move westward more to form a government for closely tied to their religion then separate from the church, unlike their brethren from Massachusetts. Puritans came about to make a refuge where they thought their religion could not be jeopardized, this would be known as Massachusetts. Moreover to a liberal side would be that of Rhode Island. Here Roger Williams founded a land where religious acceptance from Catholics to Quakers, thus forming "the sewer" of all the new world colonies.
Diversity is the theme that makes the middle colonies what they are. Maryland, New York, as well as Pennsylvania made themselves off well amongst the middle with others. Those in England persecuted for being Catholic transplanted themselves in Maryland. Here in Maryland many conflicts arose of their surround Protestant harassers. In Pennsylvania Quakers founded the site by William Penn, in order to attract much other fellows like him, and institute a form a democracy. Then you have New York familiar in the ways of an aristocratic way of life, much like the southern colonies.
Upper-classed colonies of Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina enjoyed the acre large plantations to support their needs. In Georgia, the "melting pot" of the colonies, where all forms of Christianity was accepted, less you be Catholic. Populated by Irish to prison debtors this was probably the most diverse of the colonies. North Caroline like Rhode Island was extremely open-minded and democratic thus willing to accept the different.
