            Definition- Osteoarthritis is the condition that is commonly known as arthritis. It is a painful condition that is caused by the deterioration of cartilage that covers the ends of bones and joints. The bones are usually affected also. What happens is, the ends of bones and joints scrape together, and when they do it causes great pain. Arthritis most commonly happens to people after they reach middle age.
             Causes- Arthritis is simply caused by the deterioration of the cartilage at the ends of bones and joints.
             Signs and Symptoms- People diagnosed with arthritis may experience varied symptoms. After the use of a joint, they will more than likely feel pain. The joints may also hurt when the weather changes. Swelling of the joints and small bumps on the finger or joint may also occur.
             Tests- There are currently no tests detecting this form of arthritis because the symptoms make it very easy to detect and is very common. However other types of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis do.
             Statistics- In the United States alone, more than 16 million suffer from arthritis. Of these people, less than half of them experience no symptoms at all. According to the arthritis foundation, most people have arthritis to some degree.
             Treatments and Cures- In the earlier stages, nonsteroidal drugs such as ibuprofen are given to relieve the pain. Exercise and relieving stress on the joints as well as getting more rest are some other ways that a person who has this disease can benefit. Other treatments include taking hot baths and putting a hot or cold compress on it. In severe cases, surgery is an option.
             Outcomes and Prevention- People that are overweight and have jobs that include intense physical activity are more susceptible to getting arthritis than others. To prevent arthritis from occurring, there are various measures that may be taken. You can easily lower your risk of getting it by keeping your weight down, and keeping your levels of stress down.
