Because of the bewildered looks, one could infer that the men are out of control of the situation. "The masculine role of being in charge is a tough one," declares Diane Barthel in her essay "A Gentleman and a Consumer." Throughout time, it has always been expected that masculinity be asserted. Men have always been portrayed as the ones who pursue the woman. Because this gender role is still prominent in our society, the men are thrown for a loop when taken out of the dominate role. They are not used to a situation in which they are pursued by a woman and therefore are surprised to be in that role. .
Once the men get over their initial shock, the man with glasses shows them the CD. The guys briefly look at it, then inquire which woman wanted to purchase the CD for them. This is a prime example of how men focus a lot of their attention on women and their bodies. Instead of being interested in what they are getting for free, they immediately wonder what kind of woman is buying them this gift. They wonder how close she is to the centerfold standards that each one desires.
The man proceeds to direct them towards a woman that would be considered beautiful by most men. Not your typical woman, the tall blonde looks like she is straight out of a centerfold. She is scantily clad in what seems to be lacy lingerie. The revealing outfit leaves no secret about the woman's shape and form. At the sight of the breathtaking woman, the men are stunned and gawk at her. Once the woman begins to approach them, all the men become extremely nervous. Most men are not used to dealing with a centerfold body in close quarters. "Men are destined to fervently desire them, to compete for them, to sacrifice emotional and physical well-being for them, but rarely to enjoy them except from afar," suggests Gary Brooks.
